Governor Masaaki Shirakawa

Masaaki Shirakawa is the 30th Governor of the Bank of Japan. He was appointed to the position on on April 9, 2008, succeeding Toshihiko Fukui. He was the government's third pick for the position; the previous two candidates were opposed by the main opposition Democratic Party, which said their connections with the finance ministry could harm the central bank's independence. Mr. Shirakawa's 5-year term will end in 2013.
Mr. Shirakawa holds a B.A. in Economics from The University of Tokyo, and joined the Bank of Japan in 1972. He subsequently earned an M.A. in economics from the University of Chicago. He joined the faculty of the Kyoto University School of Government in 2006, and returned to the Bank of Japan in March, 2008 as Deputy Governor.
