"Loonie" is the nickname given to the Canadian dollar and is derived from the image of the loon (a Canadian waterfowl) on the reverse side of the dollar coin. Currency traders use the "loonie" moniker to distinguish Canadian currency from its U.S. (the "buck" or "greenback") and Australian ("aussie") counterparts.
